EA buys Lord of the Rings license from Vivendi

Spotted this over at Action Trip. Electronic Arts has purchased the license to create games based upon the literary works of The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien.

EA already had the rights to make games based off of the films, so now EA owns the sole rights to make games based upon the entire property.

A lot of people don't seem to like this, seeing as how EA is buying everything and trying to create a Microsoft style monopoly on game development; however seeing as how all of Vivendi's prior The Lord of the Rings titles have essentially sucked and EA's 4 titles based on the films were good to great, this may not be such a bad thing.

Presently they're developing a new RTS for the PC, The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth II, and a title for the PSP.
